The University of Southern California is launching a new interdisciplinary programme in stereoscopic 3D at their school of cinematic arts to help students master this emerging technique.

With 3D expected to revolutionise the movie industry, as well as cause a big wave in digital signage applications, it is perhaps unsurprising that a course has now been set up to prepare a set of technicians in this field.

Scott Fisher, chair of USC's interactive media division, said the programme was a response to increasing demand from Hollywood studios for candidates with a strong grounding in 3D.

"We're getting so many requests from industry to provide them with this kind of background in stereoscopic imaging because they're making more and more films and need that kind of talent to move things forward," he said.

The course is set to begin next Autumn.
