The future of screens is here

Samsung Transparent Touch Screen 1

The window setting of the screen cleary shows the content and the townscape behind

We get a first look at the new Transparent LCD Touch Screen from Samsung.

Samsung have just unveiled a technology which could change the way we think about screens for good. They have developed a completely transparent display with integrated touch technology.

DS Europe got an exclusive first look at the new LCD transparent multi touch screen.

The display was built into a ‘window ‘setting with a fake townscape behind, which was clearly visible even when images fill the screen. The user is able to view files, tweet, shop online – all the usual things you can do with your PC – using the multi-touch screen, whilst still being able to view the world outside straight through the images on screen.

The technology is such that the screen does not need to be backlit during the day; it uses ambient light alone. In darker settings, a backlight will ensure that the screen is still visible.

We don’t currently have all of the technical specs and details – we’ll be bringing them to you soon – but we can say that we found the technology incredibly exciting, with the range of possible applications almost inexhaustible. Samsung have been talking about building the screen into the front of a refrigerator, so you wouldn’t even have to open the door before using the device to order your groceries.

For the exclusive story, look out for the Summer issue of DS Europe, heading your way in a few weeks. And to see the screens for yourself, make sure you are in Essen this May for DIGITAL SIGNAGE EXPO 2011.

We’ll remember this day when we’re all walking around with completely clear smart phone in our pockets...
