Philips Smart Insert Solution
The Smart Insert is a provision at the back of a display which allows a small form factor (SFF) PC or media device to be inserted discreetly. The Smart Insert allows system integrators and solution providers operational flexibility and better serviceability as opposed to all-in-one digital signage displays. The Smart Insert was developed by Philips to upgrade, service and swap professional PCs more simply without the need of replacing the complete display. Upgrades are necessary when you change to another content management system or when changing to a more advanced resolution or content format.
Wilfred de Man, Director Sales & Marketing EMEA, says, “With our Smart Insert concept we have provided a unique solution combining the aesthetic design of the latest slim Philips displays with the benefits of a built-in PC. In addition, the Smart Insert also offers hardware and software flexibility, future PC upgradability opportunities when customers decide to upgrade to high definition content distribution and an easy, low cost service solution.”
Partnership with AOpen
To complement the Smart Insert range, MMD has partnered with leading SFF PC manufacturer AOpen and developed a special bracket to fit the form factor of their Digital Engines range. The AOpen Digital Engines have been created especially for the needs of the Digital Signage market and are small, powerful, energy efficient and above all fit perfectly in the Smart Insert. Due to the military grade components AOpen can offer reliable hardware solutions that can perform at their full potential 24/7. AOpen also offers fanless systems that can cope with dusty environments making the player reliable in every location.
Key Benefits of Smart Insert include:
- Installation aesthetics: No extra depth is added to the installation. Smart Insert allows enough depth for most small PCs to offer the same benefit.
- Service: When there is a problem with the PC, there is only the cost of PC replacement, not of full display.
- Upgradability: Smart Insert allows customers to use a “low end” industrial PC for the content needs of today and to upgrade at a later date when technology such as FHD content is more in demand.
- Flexibility: Customers can decide to use their own choice of industrial PCs and/or software solutions with the flexibility and benefits of the Smart Insert range.
- AC Out: The AC out connector is able to provide power to external devices of up to 200 watts.
Philips Smart Insert is currently available on the following models: BDL4251V, BDL5231V. From March 2010 it will be available on the BDL4230E and on the BDL6551V from April 2010.
The following Digital Engines are pre-tested with Philips’ Smart Insert: DE2700, DE45-PRO and DE7000.

Guide to Embedded Computers for Outdoor DS
The advertising industry expects digital signage’s net turnover to triple over the next three years, in part driven by the falling prices of flat panels. Outdoor applications for digital signage, though, face a challenge in terms of durability and long-term availability. For these situations, embedded computing is the technology of choice.
